Hull-based Holliday Pigments beat off competition from across the UK to win the Sustainable Development Award at the prestigious Chemical Industries Association’s Awards Dinner in London last night (5 July 2006).
An annual celebration of innovation, achievement and entrepreneurialism in one of Britain’s most dynamic and significant business sectors, the chemicals industry award ceremony was held at the London Hilton, hosted by the BBC's Guy Ruddle.
Chief Executive Officer Robert Rae says: “This award is all the more rewarding for the team as stringent environmental policies and responsible manufacturing processes were set down in order for us to achieve our environmental, social and economic goals. We are delighted to have emerged as winners of the industry’s most established and recognised awards, which only affirms Holliday Pigments’ dedication to environmentally-sound manufacturing and commitment to long term solutions for the benefit of future generations.”
Holliday Pigments has invested over $30 million in flue gas desulpurisation plants at its Hull and Comines’ (North France) sites, which has resulted in massive reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions inherent in its manufacturing processes. Innovative solutions have also been developed leading to waste minimisation, energy efficiency and water savings.
Says Holliday Pigments’ Environmental & Sustainability Advisor Gary Walters: “We know that the best ideas for improvements most often come from people who do the job everyday and so we were keen to encourage our team to take ownership, come forward and contribute a voice for the well being of the business and the community.”
Employees at Holliday Pigments are encouraged to play a significant role by participating in the monthly ‘Bright Ideas’ competition where their sustainable development ideas are entered via a database and winning ideas implemented by the company.
Attended by industry leaders from across the UK, the Chemical Industry Awards provide not only an unrivalled opportunity to bring together UK business leaders but also a platform to promote the chemical industry achievements of the industry to its key stakeholders.
The panel of judges consisted of a senior group of eminent industry leaders and senior representatives from the Chemical Industries Association. More information can be found at www.cia.org.uk and www.chemicalindustryawards.co.uk/
