One of the region’s biggest employers is hitting back at headlines that dubbed Hull folk the ‘dimmest in the UK’.
Home to Holliday Pigments - the world’s number one manufacturer of ultramarine blue - Hull is a centre of chemical excellence boasting some of Britain’s biggest brainiacs.
Newest recruit, Alex Goodson, 23, joins after completing an MSc (Eng) degree in Environmental & Energy Engineering at the University of Sheffield and a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management.
Working closely with leading educational institutions, including Leeds and Sheffield Universities, the company prides itself on being an innovator in its field. As an active participant in the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme – a specialist programme providing business-based training for high achieving academics – the company attracts exceptional graduates in its specialist field.
It’s through the appointment of KTP Associates such as Alex that Holliday Pigments is continually looking to develop its environmental initiatives for the future. Holliday Pigments is the only pigment manufacturer globally to have heavily invested in flue gas desulphurisation plants at both its Hull and Comines, North France, sites, and was recently recognised the 2006 winner of the Chemical Industries’ Sustainable Development Award.
Overseeing the two-year project which Alex has been brought on board to champion is Operations Director, Glyn Jagger: “Alex’s primary task is to develop the use of novel technologies to reduce the organisation’s dependence on non-renewable resources, thus further improving its environmental performance, “says Glyn. “I wish him all the best as he embarks on this challenging assignment.”
The scathing survey, conducted by a well known men’s title, graded locations using a combination of statistics including exam results and performance in the BBC IQ quiz ‘Test the Nation’, to brand the Humberside city the thickest in the land.
“It seems absurd that Hull gets tarred with this reputation of being dim when it is an ambassador for chemical excellence across the globe,” says Alex. “I am pleased to have been given this opportunity to work with a company which is a recognised leader in its field with a longstanding reputation for innovation.”
