Hull-based Holliday Pigments is pleased to present its three nominated charities with a sizeable cheque this Christmas.
Inspired by the plight of co-worker Vince Gallagher, 43, whose nine-year-old daughter Megan suffered from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, staff have worked hard organising various initiatives throughout the year to reach the £3,000 gifted to When You Wish Upon a Star, Candlelighters and Cancer Research UK.
The main initiative was a gruelling190 mile, three day charity bike ride on a circular tour through the Hambleton Hills, Osmotherly, Whitby, Scarborough and the North Yorkshire Moors. On completion this summer, staff then set to selling cakes and organising raffles to raise as much money as possible for the remainder of the year. The £3,000 has been split equally and presented when representatives from each of the three charities attended a specially organised event at Holliday Pigments UK headquarters on Morley Street.
“Unfortunately the treatment of childhood cancer is both expensive and unpleasant and the unit hospital relies heavily on charitable support for its work,” says Sally Amos from Candlelighters - the charity which supports the Regional Children's Cancer Unit at St James’ Hospital, Leeds, where Megan was treated. “We were thrilled to receive this donation from Holliday Pigments, which will make a real difference to the facilities for the families treated here and as a result we hope to have many more happy endings like Megan’s.”
Thankfully Megan is now in remission and is making a good recovery but many families are not so fortunate. When You Wish Upon a Star – a charity which provides reprieve for sick children – used the money donated by Holliday Pigments to part fund a Christmas day trip from Humberside to Lapland for 100 terminally ill children.
“It is well worth the effort as there’s no greater pleasure in life then to see a smile light up the faces of people in need,” says Ian Wilkinson, IT Manager at Holliday Pigments. “We are now planning for next year’s charity event, which could possibly entail fire walking or even parachute jumping – we’ll have to see how brave we’re feeling in the New Year!” -ENDS- Notes to editors
